Top Ten Books On My Spring TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

Ah, spring has sprung. Actually, I've been getting spring since January because we've barely had a winter. I kind of hate that, because I do genuinely love winter and I was so wanting some snow, deep and that would hang around for days. Also, it leaves me worried that, because we were unseasonably warm and dry, we are going to get a hot, really dry summer.

Anyway, books. My reading has been really scattered so I kind of went the route of not going with any certain type of book. Besides, my springtime reading is usually quite…eclectic anyway.

Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor
Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.

This is not that world.

Art student and monster's apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she'll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?

The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

Elisa is the chosen one.

But she is also the younger of two princesses, the one who has never done anything remarkable. She can't see how she ever will.

Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.

And he's not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies seething with dark magic are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people's savior. And he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.

Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young.

Most of the chosen do.

Gilded Ashes by Rosamund Hodge
Orphan Maia doesn't see the point of love when it only brings pain: Her dying mother made a bargain with the evil, all-powerful ruler of their world that anyone who hurt her beloved daughter would be punished; her new stepmother went mad with grief when Maia's father died; and her stepsisters are desperate for their mother's approval, yet she always spurns them. And though her family has turned her into a despised servant, Maia must always pretend to be happy, or else they'll all be struck dead by the curse.

Anax, heir to the Duke of Sardis, doesn't believe in love either—not since he discovered that his childhood sweetheart was only using him for his noble title. What's the point of pretending to fall in love with a girl just so she'll pretend to fall in love with him back? But when his father invites all the suitable girls in the kingdom to a masked ball, Anax must finally give in and select a wife.

As fate would have it, the preparations for the masquerade bring him Maia, who was asked by her eldest stepsister to deliver letters to Anax. Despite a prickly first encounter, he is charmed and intrigued by this mysterious girl who doesn't believe in love. Anax can't help wishing to see her again—and when he does, he can't help falling in love with her. Against her will, Maia starts to fall in love with him too. But how can she be with him when every moment his life is in danger from her mother's deadly bargain?

  1. I LOVE Laini Taylor's writing! The prose is just gorgeous - if I ever write like that it just sounds over done and awkward, but somehow she gets the words just right so it's an entire different atmosphere *sighs dreamily*

And I'll be interested to see what you think of Girl of Fire and Thorns as it was one of my favourite reads of last year (although I haven't read the rest yet. I'm so terrible about that!). But more than anything, if you like Bloodhound and end up reading the last voin I NEED you to let me know because I NEED to talk to someone about it!!

    1. Laini Taylor's writing is definitely different than what I usually prefer. I am much more a fan of the more straightforward, no frills, writing style. But there's just something about her writing and her story that is beautiful and drew me in.

I'm definitely curious about Girl of Fire and Thorns because I have heard such great things about it. Can't wait to see what I think of it. Excited for Bloodhound, and I can't believe how long it's taken me to get to it. (Honestly, the last one worries me because you're not the only one I've heard bad things about it from. And a bad ending can kill an entire series for me. Oh, well, if I like Bloodhound I'll get to it eventually!)
